Reig Fundació Archive

REIG FUNDACIÓ ARCHIVE

Reig Fundació, in its desire to preserve the collective memory of Andorra, felt it was necessary to compile, conserve and disseminate the documentation referring to Julià Reig Ribó, Òscar Reig Ribó and their family. We should also mention the part corresponding to the entrepreneurial activity, of which the collection at the Antiga fàbrica Reig (the Former Reig factory) is worthy of a mention.

ÒSCAR RIBAS REIG POLITICAL ARCHIVE

The Òscar Ribas Reig Political Archive brings together all the documentation that refers to his political activity: as secretary of Sant Julià de Lòria Town Council between 1963 and 1965, as Conseller General for Sant Julià de Lòria between 1972 and 1975, and 1976 and 1979, as head of the Andorran Government between 1982 and 1984 and between 1990 and 1994 and as a politician, consultant and person linked to the world of politics since 1994.

Most of this documentation is found in the archives of the official organisations (Consell General and Government). The particular interest of this collection is that it allows an analysis of the political career of the first head of the Andorran Government, it looks at his relations and his state approach that can often be deduced from the notes to his speeches, the personal relationships and the relationships beyond the world of politics.

JULIÀ REIG RIBÓ POLITICAL ARCHIVE

The Julià Reig Ribó political archive compiles the documentation during his political activity as a General Syndic from 1960 to 1967 and from 1973 to 1979.

Most of this documentation is found in the archives of the official organisations (Consell General and Government). This private archive allows us to analyse the political career of a General Syndic who, among other things, promoted social security in the Principality, universal suffrage and also laid the foundations of the Andorran administration. He was also a key member in the creation of the Fire Brigade, he decreed equal legal rights between men and women, he had schools constructed in all the parishes and he limited the term of office of the syndics to just one re-election.

FAMILY ARCHIVE

These are the documents that refer to the most personal and private information of the various members of the Reig family.

CAL RAFELÓ ARCHIVE

In this section, we would highlight the Cal Rafeló Archive, which consists of 303 glass plates and negatives taken by Julià Reig Roqueta. The images correspond to the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The subject matter mainly focuses on political and social events in the town of Sant Julià and there are also portraits of some of its inhabitants. In 2012, the National Archive of Andorra and Reig Fundació signed a collaboration agreement so that the National Archive could have the Cal Rafeló collection available for consultation.

REIG TOBACCO FACTORY ARCHIVE

This archive brings together all the information compiled and generated by the Reig family regarding the Julià Reig Tobacco Factory.

It is a closed collection as the factory opened in 1909 and closed in 1957. However, documentation before and after these dates has been found. That from before its opening corresponds to the activity of the workshop that functioned before the opening of the factory, and the documentation from after its closure corresponds to the beginning of the opening of the new Tabacs Reig, SA factory which closed in 2007.

This archive enables us to look more deeply into the impact that tobacco had, both on the Reig family as well as on the economic activity of the country as a whole.

VALIRA CINEMA

In 2005, the town of Escaldes-Engordany opened the new Art Centre housed in the former Valira Cinema. The building was constructed between 1933 and 1934, designed by a monk from Montserrat as a school. Years later, it was to become the garage of Hotel Valira and later became the first cinema in Andorra. The building of the former Valira Cinema became one of the most highly appreciated cultural assets in the town of Escaldes-Engordany, not just because of its historic value but also because of its architectural style as it was one of the first examples constructed using the premises of so-called “granite architecture”.

It still preserves two of the film projectors that operated during the 1950s. For the members of the Ribas family and Reig Fundació, this material represents a beloved heritage, which they would like to share with their fellow citizens of Andorra and of Escaldes-Engordany in particular.

This is why, in the summer of 2007, Reig Fundació offered Escaldes-Engordany Town Council the two machines so that they could be exhibited in the current Art Centre in Escaldes-Engordany, the former Valira Cinema. This initiative responds to the aim to pay tribute to a leisure time place and activity, the cinema, which was so important during those years and the memory of which still survives in many of the citizens of Andorra and, in particular, of Escaldes-Engordany.

Prior to this, the foundation had the two film projectors restored. They are 35-mm projectors with a size of 170 x 150 x 50 cm, in chromed, painted stainless steel and iron. They were manufactured by Supersound SA, owned by Hugo Texidó, based in Barcelona. The Supersound-Vanguard III is probably pre-1950s. The kind of lantern is one by means of which light was obtained thanks to two bars of carbon with opposing charges which created an incandescent electric arc when fed an electric current.
