The Tobacco Museum
The Reig family's deep traditional involvement in the tobacco industry dates back to 1880, when Rafael Reig Sans opened a small workshop in Sant Julià de Lòria. In 1909, his son Julià Reig Roqueta erected the building we now know as the old Reig factory, where many village men and women worked in the first half of the twentieth century, making, by hand, loose tobacco, cigarettes, caliqueños and other tobacco products that were sold both in Andorra and abroad. By 1957 the factory was no longer able to keep up with increased demand and it closed its doors, just as the larger, more modern factory opened next door.
The Tobacco Museum Old Reig Factory is an outstanding building that has been refurbished to illustrate and explain the production process and the human relations in a rural mountain society, where the cultivation of tobacco and the manufacture of tobacco products was basic to the life of the Andorran villages and their people. The museum aims to offer a more human view of tobacco manufacture, one that is both surprising and rooted in the life of the country, revealing its social and cultural significance, above and beyond the purely material aspects.
Visitors can see the tools, equipment, machines and furnishings of the tobacco industry, as well as its "best-kept secrets", as they were during the first half of the twentieth century. Two voices describe the various displays, the voices of a man and a woman who recall the nineteen-thirties and forties, and who help visitors to understand both the logic of the early tobacco factories and the technical changes and modernization that has occurred since. The museum lets visitors see the whole of the tobacco-manufacturing process, in which local history melds with the history and culture of tobacco round the world.
The opening of the Tobacco Museum Old Reig Factory has meant the creation of a space in which the country's historical memory is preserved, alongside a documentary and reference centre for those who want to know everything about tobacco from the fields, to the drying-racks, to the factory, to the shops as well as its relation with recent Andorran society and history. The Tobacco Museum Old Reig Factory is a witness to that recent past and a homage to the work and memory of the men and women who lived through it.
