The sustainability of andorran development
On 4 April 2003, the Julià Reig Foundation and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia signed a collaboration agreement to carry out a study on the limits to the sustainability of growth in the Principality of Andorra. The research was conducted with a view to providing a forecast concerning the environmental, social, economic and institutional framework and supplies the basis for analysing how all these elements relate to each other and how they will inter-relate in the future.
The research has a double aim. In the first place, it studied the indicators making it possible to forecast future scenarios and designed models showing the interactions among the different variables of the country as it is today and how they are likely to develop in the medium term. The second aim was to draw up a lively document, open and accessible to Andorrans, promoting spaces for debate and containing sufficient information for discussing the type of country we want Andorra to be.
The study was carried out on the basis of work done by a multidisciplinary team of researchers co-ordinated by the UNESCO Chair of Technology, Sustainable Development, Imbalances and Global Change of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia directed by Enric Carrera.
This is a study of various different possible futures for a small country such as Andorra, taking into account its development trends and its ways of sustaining itself as well as the developmental trends of its near and global surroundings.
We organised a technical seminar to publicise the findings of this work, explain the method used and show the different possible future scenarios.
It was attended by some thirty people from every sphere and stratum of Andorran society to do with, or interested in, the issue of sustainability.
