Horts socials (Social allotments)
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With the theme Look after an allotment look after your health, the Horts Socials (Social allotments) project was begun in 2001 in response to the Julià Reig Foundation's desire to promote an innovative service that would lead to an improved quality of life for retired people, through a useful activity taking place in the open air.
The plan put forward for the Horts Socials (Social allotments) project takes account of the way the elderly now live, in the sense that active participation is needed in order to live longer while maintaining vitality and quality of life. Furthermore, allotment-keeping is one of the long-standing customs of Andorran life. At present, the scheme provides allotments for 128 users, 24 in Horts del Dau and Horts del Ganxo, in Sant Julià de Lòria, 18 in Horts del Sucarana, in Escaldes-Engordany, 36 in Horts de Terres Primeres, in Encamp, 29 in Horts de la Margineda, in Santa Coloma (Andorra la Vella), 15 in Horts de Cal Cintet, in Sispony (La Massana) and 4 in Horts de Casa Rossell and 6 in L'Hort de les Hortes in Ordino. At the end of each season (October), the Julià Reig Foundation organises a trip with all the allotment users. The trip is always related to the work in the fields. Therefore, in 2002 we went to Manresa, in 2003 to Balaguer, in 2004 to visit the Can Cadena urban allotments in Barcelona, in 2005 to visit the Canals & Domigo wine cellars in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, in 2006 the Wine Museum, the Rural Life Museum and the Caves in l'Espluga de Francolí, 2007 the Esterri d'Àneu Ecomuseum and the Santa Maria d'Àneu church, in 2008 the Cercs Mines and in 2009 the Museu del Tabac in Sant Julià de Lòria. Due to the incorporation of the communes of Encamp, la Massana, Andorra la Vella and Ordino to the project, since four years ago we celebrate each year an intercommune gathering where one of the communes invites the others to visit their allotments to exchange experiences. The four gatherings have taken place in Encamp, Sant Julià de Lòria, Escaldes-Engordany and La Massana.
